Reunion: Rangers Filip Helander eyes Ibrox reunion in Govan
Former Rangers defender Filip Helander has admitted he hopes to one day watch a game at Ibrox and reunite with his old teammates.
The Swedish centre-back spent four years at Ibrox, between 2019 and 2023, before leaving for Odense in the Danish Superligaen on a free transfer.
Despite several seasons with the Scottish giants, Helander only made 60 appearances but still looks forward to reuniting with his former teammates and watching from the stands amid a brilliant campaign under Philippe Clement.
Speaking to Glasgow World on Wednesday (6 March), he said: “I spent four good years at Rangers, especially my first two years where I got to play a lot and then I didn’t get to play a lot last two seasons because of injury.
“I hoped that I could have done more in the last two years, but I wish these guys every success. To be fair to them, there was always that big insecurity about me, whether or not I was going to be fit at the time. I don’t have any hard feelings.
“I just wish them luck and I am still proud of my time there. We got to win 55, which was a big moment for all of us and I support them as much as I can. I would love to come back there one day to maybe see a few of the guys still there and watch a good game.”
Filip Helander reminisces about his time at Rangers
If Helander were to return to Ibrox, it is likely that the defender would be welcomed back with open arms after a four-year stay at the club.
The 30 year old is still playing at a decent level, starting 13 of Odense’s 20 league matches so far, but is unlikely to make a playing return for Rangers, even despite 31 year old Connor Goldson and 35 year-old Leon Balogun still in the squad.
The current story at Ibrox, which is being written by Clement since taking over from Michael Beale in October, is making its way around the football world and could have an extremely exciting end to the campaign.
Philippe Clement has done an incredible job at Rangers since October.
During the Beale reign, it seemed as though the Gers’ hopes of lifting the Scottish Premiership trophy were dead in the water. But under the Belgian, these same hopes have been reignited, with Celtic knocked off the top perch in recent weeks.
In addition to this, the Gers remain in the Europa League, with upcoming fixtures against Benfica, which could mean that Ibrox is filled with silverware before the end of the season.
